| ColaLex Gallery is a community-based art gallery that features Hispanic and Caribbean inspired artwork, as well as mainstream artistry. Founded in 2007 by Pierre Colas, Mario Douge (owner of MJD Construction Corp.) & Ben Lawson (model & musician), the gallery will house various commercial artworks such as: sculptures, photographs, paintings, as well as exhibitions and events. Colas, a native of Haiti moved to the United States at a young age with his family in hopes of living the American Dream.
Colas always had dreams of becoming an artist and owning a gallery. His passion for painting spans 25 years. A self-taught artist with some training from the Art Student League in New York City, Colas is knowledgeable in many artistic genres. Early in his career, Colas enjoyed painting abstract vegetation and landscapes. As his artistic approach matured, his inspiration shifted toward painting more conceptual pieces. Painting has continuously been an escape that Colas uses to truthfully express himself. Having endured a difficult experience and his own dark nights of the soul, he now finds solace in creating abstract surrealism artwork that symbolizes freedom, breakthroughs and new beginnings.
While painting his works of art, which are mostly done on a daily basis, Colas finds that listening to music opens the floodgates for his creativity. "I enjoy listening to everything from Jazz, Classical to Motown," says Colas. For him, finding stimulation from a fellow artist's different form of expression is gratifying.
Not only does his life experiences and music influence his work, spirituality is his main source of inspiration. Keeping The Creator of the Universe forefront in every aspect of his life plays an integral role in keeping Colas grounded and focused. His spirituality is reflected in many of his paintings.
